“Your Body Is Your Weapon” is an illustrated guide for females on the basics of self-defense. It addresses the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of assault and self-protection, but is different from the typical self-defense book because it is written in free verse. When you know the fundamentals of how to stay safe and how to fight for yourself you increase your chances for survival. In 8 short chapters of poetry & pictures, this book shows that you can do that.
I chose to use poetry because it was a natural way of communicating the information for me. It has been my favorite form of writing since I was a kid. I like that facts can be conveyed succinctly, and the gist of the words can also be felt through rhythm and sound. Feeling, sensing, and understanding are important.
Years ago, while teaching self-defense techniques, one of my instructors mentioned the acronym «K.I.S.S.» to students and asked if we knew what it meant. I shrugged. «Keep It Simple, Stupid.» he said. Another meaning for this design principle I later learned was: «Keep It Short & Simple.» This stuck in my mind over time, and I used it as guidance when creating this book, keeping it to a short eight chapters. It is also why the subtitle is called The Little Self Defense Handbook.
There is at least one technique illustrated per chapter. E.g., a palm heel strike, a knee, and so on. Each is shown from different angles and how it may be applied against an attacker. Rather than photos, I use drawings, which are simple, technical, and meant to be like something one might find in a notebook.
